Since the formation of the Kuban Medical Institute (KMI), students have been engaged in physical education on their own.Later, in 1924, a football team and sections for artistic gymnastics, weightlifting, athletics, and basketball appeared.Compulsory physical education classes were introduced in 1929 for the first four years and took place in the assembly hall.The first head of the physical education department in 1932 was the physiologist, an active participant in the physical education circle Yu.I.Danko.In 1950, the Department of Physical Education and Medical Physical Education was re-established.Until 1958, the department was headed by Associate Professor, Candidate of Medical Sciences, consultant physician for exercise therapy at the regional clinical hospital, Arseniy Fedorovich Poroshin, a participant in the Great Patriotic War.From 1958 to 1965, the department was headed by senior teacher Alexander Aleksandrovich Podchishchaev, who for a long time headed the regional sports society “Medic”, a participant in the Great Patriotic War, awarded combat medals.In 1965, senior teacher Yuri Borisovich Surukhanov, who had worked at the department since 1953, was elected head of the department.For his merits in his work, he was awarded honorary signs from the Central Committee “Burevestnik” and “Excellence in Physical Culture”, and was noted with thanks from the Ministry of Health of the RSFSR.Associate Professor, Candidate of Medical Sciences Sergei Fedorovich Tuzov headed the department in 1979–1980 and 1981–1983.He was a participant in the Great Patriotic War, a holder of the Order of the Red Star and medals.In 1981, the duties of the head of the department were performed by senior teacher Yuri Alekseevich Kolotovkin, an eight-time champion of the RSFSR in athletics, an honored coach of the RSFSR, an all-Union category judge, a participant in the Great Patriotic War, awarded the “Excellence in Physical Culture” badge and military medals.Associate Professor, Candidate of Medical Sciences Vasily Vasilievich Savitsky headed the department in 1978–1979 and in 1983–1985.A graduate of 1951, a participant in the Great Patriotic War, a holder of the Order of the Red Star and military medals, an excellent student of health care, he worked at the institute for more than 50 years and is the author of about 150 publications, two inventions, four teaching aids, and the supervisor of two dissertations.Associate Professor, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Honorary Master of Sports of the USSR in Greco-Roman Wrestling, Honored Trainer of the RSFSR Nikolai Danilovich Dianov headed the department from 1986 to 1991, awarded the medal “For Labor Valor”.Associate Professor, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Master of Sports of the USSR of international class in swimming, judge of the republican category, participant of the XX Olympic Games in Munich, Honored Worker of Physical Culture and Sports of Kuban Lyudmila Nikolaevna Porubayko headed the department from 1991 to 2024.
