Kuban State Medical University (KubSMU) is one of the oldest universities in the region. Over the years of its existence, it has gone a long way in becoming, turning from the medical faculty of the first Kuban University into one of the reputable educational institutions among the top ten medical universities in the country.
Currently, Kuban State Medical University is a large developing center of science, education and innovation, where they focus on the active involvement of young specialists in research and the study of advanced areas in medicine.
KubSMU has 7 faculties: medical, dental, pediatric, pharmaceutical, preventive medicine, Faculty of pre-university training, Faculty of Advanced Training and professional retraining of specialists. The university’s structure includes the Clinic of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education KubSMU of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, a scientific and medical library, a multi-profile accreditation and simulation center, an educational and production department (vivarium and experimental operating room), administrative and business units. The bases of the university’s clinical departments are all the leading medical institutions of the city and the region.
The University occupies a special place in the structure of continuing medical education in Russia due to the quality management system of professional education. This system reflects the multilevel nature of educational process management. The university management is integrated into a local computer network. The development of scientific and pedagogical potential is carried out through postgraduate studies and job placement, the Faculty of Advanced Training.
More than 6,000 students study at the university, and more than 1,000 people who have successfully confirmed their qualifications at the initial accreditation tests of specialists in 2019 become graduates every year. Fulfilling the state task of training specialists with higher professional education, KubSMU trains students according to the target set from the municipalities of the Krasnodar Territory – this is 80% of the total targeted admission to the university. In 2018, international students studying in English were enrolled for the first time.
In addition, the university is carrying out extensive work to improve the knowledge of medical professionals in the region, taking into account the needs of practical healthcare: every year more than 6,000 students take additional professional education courses. In 2019, 1,273 people studied at the departments of KubSMU as clinical residents alone.
The educational process is carried out at 66 departments (45 – student, 21 – faculty and faculty), where real professionals with exceptional pedagogical skills and rich practical experience work.
The teaching staff includes 773 people. 596 (77.1%) teachers have academic degrees and titles, including: 1 academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2 corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 158 doctors of Sciences, 84 professors, 438 candidates of Sciences, 181 associate professors. Among the teachers are highly qualified professionals and specialists: 3 Honored Scientists of the Russian Federation, 24 Honored Doctors of the Russian Federation, 3 Honored Healthcare Workers of the Russian Federation, 69 Honored Healthcare Workers of the Kuban, 15 Honored Scientists of the Kuban, 3 Honored Scientists of the Republic of Adygea, 81 people were awarded the badge “Excellent Healthcare Worker”.
The material base of the university has become stronger and qualitatively changed. To organize the educational process, the university has a sufficient number of lecture halls capable of accommodating about 3,370 people, an anatomical hall, fundamental laboratories, historical and anatomical museums. The university has 12 computer classes. University students are taught in both traditional and innovative forms. Information technologies, multimedia projection, the Internet, and digital computer photo atlases are widely used. The total area on which the educational process is conducted is 94 thousand square meters. m.
Simulation training, virtual and augmented reality technologies are widely used in the educational process. The pride of Kuban State Medical University is the Multi-profile accreditation and simulation Center, which is one of the Russian leaders in terms of functional equipment among such departments, providing all areas of the university’s educational programs. The Center is also used for the accreditation of graduates and practitioners. All this makes it possible to solve a fundamentally important problem of medical education: to master the skill of a doctor without harming the patient.
The reconstruction of the Educational and Production Department (vivarium) with a functioning operating room equipped with an anesthetic breathing apparatus and laparoscopic equipment has been carried out, which makes it possible to increase the volume and quality of scientific experimental research and training sessions.
New information technologies are widely used in the educational process. An important role in this work is assigned to the university’s distance learning educational portal, which has made it possible to create a unified information and educational environment (http://eios.ksma.ru ), which includes the student’s personal account and portfolio. This digital learning platform and the accumulated experience made it possible to transfer the training of students and cadet doctors to a remote mode in a short time during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.
Kuban State Medical University is an active participant in professional and research international student exchange programs. These programs give medical university students the opportunity to get to know the healthcare system in other countries and exchange knowledge, experience and ideas with their foreign colleagues.
The teaching staff of the clinical departments and doctors of the university clinics are highly qualified specialists in their field and actively participate in the work of healthcare in the Krasnodar Territory. Many university staff hold senior positions in practical healthcare institutions. The University’s structural divisions provide specialized, high-tech medical care to the population of the Krasnodar Territory.
Annually, KubSMU specialists supervise more than 40 thousand patients, perform about 12 thousand surgical interventions, conduct more than 90 thousand consultations and 10 thousand consultations. The same list contains about 20,000 expert assessments of the quality of medical care, as well as 900 scientific medical examinations carried out at the request of the Ministry of Health of the Krasnodar Territory and the Territorial Fund of the Ministry of Health of the Krasnodar Territory. Many university specialists are included in the registers of experts in the quality of medical care, in the list of the main freelance specialists in public health care of the Ministry of Health of the Krasnodar Territory and Russia.
The Central Attestation Commission in the Southern Federal District, established on the basis of our university, provides an opportunity for doctors in the region to confirm or obtain a medical qualification category.
Thousands of practitioners are improving their professional level at the departments of the Faculty of Advanced Training.
Therefore, the widespread participation of university clinicians in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the operational actions of the Faculty of Advanced Training to create educational programs and improvement cycles adapted to the rapid training of doctors to counter this infection, has become a natural phenomenon.
The university is actively implementing sought-after educational programs, and innovative developments are underway that meet the practical needs of the country’s healthcare system. Educational centers and fundamental laboratories have been set up to practice practical skills.
Much attention at KubSMU is paid to research work, which is carried out through the implementation of comprehensive research projects by departments and research laboratory projects focused on solving urgent medical problems and forming a strategy to preserve and strengthen the health of the population of the Krasnodar Territory and other regions. The University conducts research on two scientific platforms – “Regenerative Medicine” and “Reproductive Health”. KubSMU has a well-equipped Central Research Laboratory, which includes the Laboratory of Fundamental Research in the field of regenerative medicine and the Department of Clinical and Experimental Immunology and Molecular diagnostics.
The university holds a leading position in terms of publication activity among all universities in the region, and among the country’s medical universities it occupies an honorable 6th place. By 2020, the Hirsch University index at the RSCI reached 97.
