Institute of Dentistry
The history of dentistry development in Kuban dates back to 1953, when a dentistry course was opened at the Department of Hospital Surgery at the Medical Faculty, which from 1953 to 1959 was headed by Associate Professor Yuri Iosifovich Bernadsky. The first intake of students to the Dental Faculty numbered 56 people. In 1968, the first graduation of dentists from the Kuban Medical Institute took place. In 1959, Associate Professor V.A. Kiselyov was appointed the first dean of the Dental Faculty. The departments of the regional dental clinic (surgical, therapeutic, orthopedic) were provided as the educational base for the Department of Dentistry. Between 1966-1968, three specialized departments were organized: Surgical, Therapeutic, and Orthopedic Dentistry, headed by Associate Professor V.A. Kiselyov, Associate Professor M.M. Tsarinsky, and Associate Professor I.Kh. Pinsky. In subsequent years, on the initiative of Professor V.A. Kiselyov, dental departments were introduced: the Faculty of Advanced Training and the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, headed by his students Professor A.I. Baronov and Associate Professor V.I. Shulzhenko. In 1998, the Department of Propaedeutics and Prevention of Dental Diseases was organized - one of the youngest at the faculty, today it is the Department of General Practice Dentistry. The departments became educational and methodological centers for practical healthcare, actively training graduate students and clinical residents, including from foreign countries. Since 2012, Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, I.M. Bykov has been appointed dean of the Dental Faculty. During this time, the faculty has formed unique traditions, developed its own method of activity, and a unique style of scientific and pedagogical work. Based on the historically established fundamental scientific school, experimental and clinical directions have been formed, which are reaching a new level of development of the Institute of Dentistry. The Institute of Dentistry, created in 2025, is headed by Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, I.M. Bykov.
Scientific Work and Departments
Currently, the team of the Institute of Dentistry departments, comprising 15 Doctors and 47 Candidates of Sciences, is capable of solving the most complex tasks. Young scientists specialize in studying the etiology and pathogenesis of dental diseases, developing methods and means of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment in dentistry. Student Scientific Societies (SSS) actively work at the dental departments, which are the most important component of the university's educational process and serve the goals of training highly qualified specialists capable of independent scientific and practical activities.
Educational Standard
Since 2021, the faculty has been implementing the plan of the new generation educational standard, providing for in-depth study of propaedeutic and clinical dentistry. At the faculty's specialized departments, work programs of the Federal State Educational Standard of Higher Education 3++ have been prepared and implemented into the educational process.
Development of Clinical Thinking
The main task of the institute for quality student education has been and remains the development of clinical thinking. At all specialized dental departments, events are constantly held to develop and implement new forms, methods, and means of activating cognitive activity into the educational process, including students actively mastering digital technologies in training programs. Phantom classes for independent student work have been created at the departments of Orthopedic Dentistry and General Practice Dentistry. The departments of Surgical and Therapeutic Dentistry have modern clinical bases. Specialized offices and thematic module platforms have been organized at the Multi-Profile Accreditation and Simulation Center: "Therapeutic Dentistry", "Orthopedic Dentistry", "CAD/CAM" technology, "Surgical Dentistry". Great attention at the faculty is paid to students' industrial practice. In 2025, the Dental Faculty was transformed into the Institute of Dentistry. The Institute of Dentistry will expand opportunities for scientific research, international cooperation, and training of highly qualified modern specialists in the field of dentistry. In 2025, 345 students, including international ones, were admitted to the Institute of Dentistry.
