Founded in 1968, the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry is one of the graduate departments of the Faculty of Dentistry and participates in the training of specialists with higher medical education in the specialty “Dentistry”. Students of the 3rd-5th courses of the Faculty of Dentistry study at the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry. In addition, the department does a lot of work with graduate students, cadets and clinical residents.
The first head of the department was a Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Isaac Kharitonovich Pinsky, who previously headed the orthopedic department of the regional dental clinic. Isaac Kharitonovich organizes and equips the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry with everything necessary for the educational process and research work on the basis of the regional dental clinic.
The first teachers made a huge contribution to the formation of the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry: associate professors Z.P. Latiy, N.V. Sergicheva, assistants: V.F. Zhuravskaya, M.G. Maksimcha, Yu.A. Petrosov, I.B. Dolbnev.
From 1971 to 1984, Associate Professor Z.P. Latii served as the head of the department. During this period, the main focus of the department’s research work was the restoration of normal bite height in newly prosthetic patients with complete tooth loss. During these years, the staff of the department was replenished with teachers from graduates of the Kuban Medical Institute: S.I. Risovanny, A.N. Litvinov, O.Z. Onopchenko.
In 1984, the department was headed by Petrosov Yuri Artemovich (1927-2008), Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honored Health Worker of Kuban, Honored Scientist of Kuban. For more than sixty years, Yu.A. Petrosov worked in dentistry, starting as an assistant at the department. Under his leadership, the main scientific direction of the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry was “Orthopedic treatment of diseases of the temporomandibular joints.” Petrosov is the author of 153 scientific papers, 20 inventions and 6 innovation proposals, winner of gold and silver medals of the USSR National Economic Exhibition. He is the author of two monographs.: “Diseases of the temporomandibular joint” and “Diagnosis and orthopedic treatment of diseases of the temporomandibular joint”. He always sought to improve his knowledge and share his experience with foreign colleagues. Therefore, he often participated in the World Dental Congresses in Paris, Vienna, and Montreal. At the department, Petrosov Yu.A. A school of conservative orthopedic treatment of diseases of the temporomandibular joints was established. Under his leadership, 10 PhD theses were defended.
Today, his students head the specialized departments of the Faculty of Dentistry, have become associate professors and assistants at our university and other universities in the country. Thanks to the active participation of Yu.A. Petrosov, in 1993 the department moved to a new educational base at 75 Kirova Street.
He was replaced in 1993 by Professor Valery Vasilyevich Yerichev. Previously, he worked at Izhevsk State Medical Institute as the head of the course, and then as the head of the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry, after which, in 1986, on a competitive basis, he was elected to the position of associate professor of the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry at the Kuban Medical Institute. In 1988, he became Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry. In 2001, he was awarded the title of professor. Yerichev also became famous for his scientific works. He is the author of 102 scientific articles, 33 teaching aids, 13 inventions and 13 innovation proposals. Under his leadership, 18 PhD theses were completed and defended. V.V. Erichev is an Honored Doctor of Russia and an honored healthcare worker of Kuban.
Since 2015, the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry has been headed by Natalia Viktorovna Lapina, MD, Professor , who graduated from our university in 1996. In 2003, Lapina N.V. defended her PhD thesis on the topic: “Features of orthopedic treatment of patients with partial tooth loss in persons with hysterical neurosis”, in 2012 – her doctoral thesis: “Stomato-somatic parallels in the process of orthopedic rehabilitation of dental patients with concomitant diseases” in Moscow. Natalia Viktorovna is the author of more than 210 scientific papers, 6 educational and 40 teaching aids, co-author of 22 patents for inventions and computer programs.
Today, the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry has its base in a separate adapted building (Kirova str., 75). The department has 9 teaching and treatment rooms and a dental laboratory. The staff of the department organized and equipped 3 phantom classrooms for 45 workplaces to improve the quality of students’ practical skills. Currently, the teaching staff of the department is represented by: Head of the academic department – PhD, Associate Professor K.G. Seferyan, Professor of the Department – MD, Professor V.L. Popkov, associate professors – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor A.N. Sidorenko, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor T.P. Starchenko, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor O.Y. Kalpakyants, Candidate of Medical Sciences T.S. Kochkonyan, Candidate of Medical Sciences A.V. Mitina, assistants – Candidate of Medical Sciences S.D. Grishechkin, Candidate of Medical Sciences Yu.V. Skorikov, S.E. Nechaeva, M.S. Grishechkin, V.A. Dubodelova, full-time clinical postgraduate student N.N. Boglay.
The teachers of the department are constantly working on improving their pedagogical skills, widely using elements of problem-based learning, business games, situational tasks, test-form assignments, and technical training tools.
The methodological work of the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry is aimed at improving the training of specialists, searching for and introducing new forms of education and methods of controlling students’ knowledge during classes in order to intensify learning by awakening students interest in the subject, creative study of educational material, practical development of clinical thinking. The Department of Orthopedic Dentistry has and is constantly updating the entire range of educational and methodological documentation.
A special feature of the scientific research development of the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry is the combination of theory with practice and the continuity of traditions. Various diagnostic and treatment methods are widely used in clinical work, many of which have been developed and implemented at the department.
In 2006-2007, the department published three textbooks “Guidelines for practical classes in orthopedic dentistry” (for 3rd, 4th and 5th year students), recommended by the educational and methodological Association for medical and pharmaceutical education in Russian universities and specified in the state standard as a mandatory textbook for students studying in the specialty 060105 (040400) – Dentistry.
In 2015, guidelines for students of the Faculty of Dentistry were published: “Simple dental prosthetics”, “Complex dental prosthetics”, “Prosthetics with complete absence of teeth”; “Maxillofacial-facial prosthetics.” They are approved by CMS GBOU VPO KubSMU of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. In 2017, the educational and methodological manuals “Modern restoration technologies in orthopedic dentistry. CAD/CAM technologies” and “Gnatology”, approved by the CMS of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Medical Education of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. In 2019, reprints of the educational and methodological manuals “Simple dental prosthetics. Part I” and “Dental prosthetics are simple. Part II”, in 2020, the textbook “Complex dental prosthetics” was revised and supplemented.
In 2023-2024, teaching aids were released: “Orthopedic dentistry. 3rd year. 1 part”, “Orthopedic dentistry. 3rd year. 6th semester.
