The Department of Pediatrics with a Neonatology course was founded on September 1, 1985 as part of the Faculty of Advanced Medical Training at the Kuban Medical Institute.
From 1985 to 2008, Professor L.A. Nikulin headed the Department of Pediatrics with a neonatology course at the Faculty of Pediatrics and Gynecology.
Since 2008, the Department of Pediatrics with the Neonatology course of the FPC and Teaching Staff has been headed by Kleshchenko Elena Ivanovna, MD, Professor, Chief Physician of the Children’s Regional Clinical Hospital, Chief Pediatrician of the Krasnodar Territory, Chairman of the regional branch of the Union of Pediatricians of Russia. He is the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the charity foundation “The Edge of Goodness”. Member of the Academic Council of KubSMU. Member of the Central Methodological Council of KubSMU, member of the central problem commission. Chairman of the expert group of the Central Attestation Commission of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation in the Southern Federal District in the field of pediatrics. Member of the commissions of the Ministry of Health of the Krasnodar Territory. Honored Healthcare Worker of Kuban.
Currently, the department has 24 employees, including 1 professor, 5 associate professors and 15 assistants.
Over the 40 years of the department’s work, the staff has done a lot of scientific work: more than 800 scientific articles and abstracts have been published, 7 PhD theses have been defended, more than 40 textbooks and teaching aids have been written, several patents, regular participation in conferences.

The department conducts professional retraining (PP) and advanced training (PC) cycles within the framework of continuing medical education (CME) in several areas for doctors: “Pediatrics”, “Neonatology”, “Pediatric Cardiology”, “Pediatric Oncology-Hematology”.
There are also PP and PC cycles for secondary medical personnel specializing in Pediatric Nursing.
Postgraduate students in pediatrics and residents in pediatrics and neonatology are being trained.
Classes for all students are conducted using a simulation center at the university: FSBEI HE KubSMU of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation Multiprofile Accreditation and Simulation Center.
Since 2018, the department has been organizing regional, interregional, All-Russian, interdisciplinary scientific and practical conferences five times a year, they are held both in face-to-face and online formats.
In 2025, the department organized the All-Russian Neonatology Olympiad for the first time.
