The beginning of the activity of the Department of Surgery of the Faculty of Dentistry was laid in 1967. At that time, the Dental Faculty’s surgery course was organized at the Department of General Surgery. In 1969, the course of surgery became independent, it was headed by associate Professor Magomet Kertibievich Nadgeriev (born in 1916, head of the department from 1969 to 1987), during the Great Patriotic War – a surgeon at the medical battalion, since 1946 – chief physician of Ordzhonikidze hospital, and then – Minister of Health of North Ossetia. In 1960-1969, he was the head of the Department of General Surgery and rector of the Blagoveshchensk Medical Institute. In 1971, after M. K. Nadgeriev defended his doctoral dissertation “Functional state of the pancreas and liver in peptic ulcer disease after gastric resection by various methods,” the surgery course was transformed into the Department of Surgery of the Faculty of Dentistry. Candidates of Medical Sciences N.I. Kolosova, D.D. Gurdjieff, T.N. Evstafieva, and I.D. Ustinovskaya worked at the Department of the Kuban Medical Institute under his leadership. In addition, at various times – Associate Professor V.A. Risovanny, O.E. Gwasava. The department’s base was the 1st City Clinical Hospital.
The origins of the future Department of Surgery of the Pediatric Faculty originate in a powerful multidisciplinary hospital surgery clinic, which was headed by the luminary of Kuban surgery, Honored Scientist, Professor Georgy Nikolaevich Lukyanov.
In 1973, the Regional Vascular Surgery Center was established on the basis of the branch of the Department of Hospital Surgery at the KHBK Hospital. In 1975, an independent department of surgery of the Pediatric Faculty was opened, headed by Professor Georgy Grigorievich Sychev. The first teachers of the department were associate Professor A. I. Slavov, Candidate of Medical Sciences Yu. I. Mamelov, Yu. N. Sidelnikov and V. V. Tokmachev. From 1973 to 1983, the regional center of angiosurgery performed about 7 thousand complex operations on the aorta and its branches, main arteries and veins.
According to the results of the work, the Krasnodar Regional Angiosurgery Center was noted by the Minister of Health B. V. Petrovsky as one of the best in the country.
The Department of Surgery of the Pediatric and Dental Faculties (now the Department of Surgical Diseases) has its own history since 1987, when the departments of surgery of these two faculties were merged. The new department was headed by Professor G.G. Sychev. After the death of G.G. Sychev, the department was headed for some time by cardiac surgeon Professor Vadim Alekseevich Prelatov. The duties of the head after his departure were performed by Associate Professor D.D. Gurdjieff. The main area of his scientific activity is surgical gastroenterology, including surgical treatment of patients with chronic colostasis syndrome.
Since 1998, the department has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Sergey Evgenievich Gumenyuk. Currently, under his leadership, the department consists of the following members: Associate Professor, Candidate of Medical Sciences Sidelnikov Alexey Yuryevich, Candidate of Medical Sciences Kaushansky Valery Borisovich, Candidate of Medical Sciences Gladkiy Evgeny Yuryevich, assistants Candidate of Medical Sciences Gubish Alexey Vladimirovich. Levi Ilya Arkadyevich, Ushmarov Denis Igorevich, Batchaeva Ramina Anzorovna, Nikitin Roman Viktorovich. Throughout the entire existence of the department, Fedoseeva Lyudmila Pavlovna has been performing the functions of a laboratory assistant.
The following disciplines are taught at the department: general surgery, faculty surgery, urology; hospital surgery for students of 2-5 courses of the Pediatric faculty and general surgery, surgical diseases for students of 34 courses of the Faculty of Dentistry of KubSMU.
The main areas of scientific activity of the department are purulent-septic surgery, issues of diagnosis and surgical treatment of manifestations of connective tissue dysplasia syndrome, issues of surgical treatment of chronic intestinal stasis syndrome, efferent therapy, vascular surgery, endoscopic surgery, bariatric surgery, development of computer software for various biomedical research.
